eSummit with Epic Delivers at Providence Medical Center

When Dennis Miller, M.D., an obstetrician/gynecologist on staff at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan., arrived at the hospital Tuesday, May 1, he knew it might be a hectic day.  After all, Providence and Saint John were going live with a new electronic medical record, eSummit with Epic.

“I had practiced the training modules and I have a different electronic medical records system in my office, so I was familiar with the process,” Dr. Miller says. But what happened next helped him learn the new system first hand.

“We had our first delivery shortly after the hospital went live, around 7:30 a.m.,” Dr. Miller says. “Luckily, we had plenty of help from our Superusers to be sure everything was appropriately charted.” But Dr. Miller’s work was far from over. By 12:30 p.m., he had delivered three more babies, all whose electronic medical records were some of the first entered into the new system.

“Once I got through the first chart, I had my favorites set up and had the basics down,” Dr. Miller adds. “By the end of the day, I was getting more comfortable with Epic. It was very easy to use and I like that all my patient charts are at my fingertips.”

The second day, Dr. Miller had the opportunity to practice eSummit with Epic even more, making three more deliveries in the Providence Family Care Center.

“Dr. Miller did an excellent job on the computer,” says Michelle Hunget, Providence Family Care Center director. “Kristi Weaver, D.O., another one of our obstetricians/gynecologists, has done a great job of supporting all of the doctors on our unit during Go-Live. She has had previous experience with the system and has definitely been a physician champion for our department. We are very fortunate!”

“Our new state-of-the-art electronic medical record includes each patient’s medical history, medications, allergies, test results and treatment notes,” adds Randy Nyp, president/CEO, Providence and Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth, Kan. “It provides complete, legible and immediate information for caregivers and doctors. Dr. Miller has done a terrific job of learning the new system and utilizing it early in our go-live process for the benefit of his patients.”

Dr. Miller says the hospital provided him the support he needed to be successful in using the new system.

“I delivered seven babies in all over the first two days we went live. I just want all of the Superusers and people who were there to help us out to know how much we appreciate them!”

eSummit with Epic is the new electronic patient medical record implemented at Providence and its affiliate, Saint John Hospital, Leavenworth, Kan., Tuesday, May 1. The new system changes the way the hospitals document care by creating a secure patient electronic medical record.

eSummit with Epic features:

• A secure electronic medical record including the patient’s medical history, medications, allergies, test results and treatment notes.

• Complete, legible and immediate information for caregivers and doctors.

• Better collaboration among providers, offering patients the safest and best quality care.

• When a patient returns to Providence or Saint John, they won’t have to remember the last time they had a specific test or the results. That information will be in the electronic medical record.
