Several Wyandotte County schools earn Standard of Excellence award

While some schools in Kansas do just enough to stay off improvement, other schools exceed the standards on the state assessments just enough to receive a special designation.

Several schools in Wyandotte County are some of those special schools.

The Kansas Department of Education announced its "Standard of Excellence" awards this week. The awards are given out based on the performance of individual grade levels and building-wide achievement.

Schools must make adequate yearly progress, have a larger percentage of students who tested in the "exemplary" level and have a lower "academic warning" student achievement percentage.

Piper Middle School was the big winner in terms of individual schools. The middle school received over 10 separate awards for their students' performances on the standardized assessments.
