Vocal concert to wrap up four nights of jazz at KCKCC

A Fall Vocal Jazz Concert will wrap up four consecutive nights of jazz at Kansas City Kansas Community College Thursday, Nov. 15.

Two jazz ensembles under the direction of John Stafford II, “The Standard” and “Soulstice,” will present a free concert at 7 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center on the KCKCC campus at 7250 State Avenue.

The concert will also feature various soloists in music by Paul Simon, Bobby McFerrin, Take 6, the New York Voices, Laura Nyro and Lambert, Hendricks and Ross.

Members of “The Standard” ensemble include Andrew Roberson, Rashad Singleton and Stormy Rhone from Kansas City, Kan.; Megan Young and Kaleb Lorg, Leavenworth; Lisa Bloom, Basehor; Morgan Tinsley, Bonner Springs; and Derek Wallace, Baldwin.

“Soustice” ensemble members include Edward Pouncil, Jorge Perez, Allison Her and Lanesha Wayne of KCK, Scott Brady of Shawnee, Braden Edwards of Overland Park, Megan Smith of Lawrence, Kristen English of Liberty and Selene Soto from Kansas City, Mo.

Instrumental jazz music will fill the Performing Arts Center Monday through Wednesday, all at 7 p.m.

A Big Band Extravaganza will kick off the series Monday and feature the KCKCC Jazz Ensemble directed by Jim Mair and two jazz ensembles from Missouri Western University.

Jazz Combo Night Tuesday will feature two KCKCC jazz combos and an improvisation combo, all directed by Mair, and the KCKCC Latin Band directed by Jurgen Welge. There is no admission charge but a $5 donation is suggested Monday and Tuesday.

Famed trumpeter Hermon Mehari will direct the Kansas City High School All-Star Band in a concert to be held at Planet Sub at 7409 Quivira in Lenexa Wednesday night.

The winner of the U.S. International Trumpet Guild and second in world competition in Australia, Mehari is expected to perform during the concert, which is open to the public without charge.
