Early Sunday morning fire injures one

A Kansas City, Kan., resident was taken to the hospital following a fire at 1503 N. 18th Street on Sunday morning.

Kansas City, Kan., firefighters responded to the home just after midnight on Sunday morning.

"Arriving crews reported thick smoke and flames coming from the front of the structure," said Kevin Shirley, deputy chief for the Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department. "The structure had been remodeled to accommodate three apartments and this hindered the fire attack."

Multiple people were in the home at the time of the fire.

In the process of escaping the home, one person suffered non-emergency second-degree burns. The person was taken to a local hospital.

About $100,000 worth of total damage was done to the home and contents inside.

No additional people were hurt in the fire.
