KU Hospital to host 8th Annual "Girls' Night In" program

University of Kansas Hospital News Release

If home is where the heart is then the kitchen must be the warmest room in the house.

That’s why The University of Kansas Hospital has secured five spectacular kitchens Feb. 19, at 6:30 p.m., to host the 8th Annual Girls’ Night In.

The event raises awareness about women's heart disease and is also a fundraiser for programs of The University of Kansas Hospital's Adelaide C. Ward Women’s Heart Health Center, which include A Change of Heart®.

The program brings women together to encourage personalized heart health assessments and lifestyle changes for a healthy heart, as well as offer guidelines to better understand the symptoms and solutions for women suffering heart disease.

Again this year - the event offers more of what women tell us they really want – an opportunity to mix and mingle with girlfriends over great food for a good cause! The event is located at Portfolio Kitchen & Home, 215 W. Pershing in the historic Pershing Building.

This year, a special celebrity cook book author will join our Top Chefs and Sous Chefs in the 7,000 square foot design studio.  Best-selling author Anne Byrn will demonstrate gluten-free cooking in the main kitchen.

Patron level donors will receive a free, autographed copy of her latest cookbook, Unbelievably Gluten-Free!  Byrn is best known for her Cake Mix Doctor and Dinner Doctor Cookbook series, as well as frequent TV appearances on Good Morning America, Roker on the Road, QVC and many others.

Then, during the main event, premier chefs from four local restaurants will team up with civic leaders to cook heart healthy bite-size dishes paired with wine. Attendees will be able to wander freely sampling the fine foods while learning heart healthy tips and sharing quality time with friends.

Sous chefs will add a spirit of competition as they solicit donations to earn the title of “Girls’ Night In Top Sous Chefs”.

Our top chefs are names you will recognize: Matt Arnold, Webster House; Michael Foust, The Farmhouse; Nina Gann, The Westside Local; and  Jonathan Justus, Justus Drugstore.  Our sous chefs are Sondra Estes, Pharra Mucke and Kim Yuille, Debbie Kennedy and Ellen Merriman, Gregory Muehlebach, MD, and Mark Wiley, MD, and Sharon Lindenbaum and Anita K. Parran.

A Change of Heart® program is inspired by the sobering fact one of three women will die from coronary vascular disease, yet women often remain unaware their heart is at risk.  The hospital’s uniquely designed heart health assessment empowers women with the tools they need to make lifestyle changes to improve their heart health.

It has inspired new curriculum being used in local schools to teach students about growing healthy hearts.

Chairing the event is Marilyn Breidenthal, a grateful patient of the hospital's heart program and avid supporter of its women’s heart health center. A few tickets are still available in advance for the exclusive event. Order online or by phone at 913.588.8888.

No tickets available at the door.
