AARP driver safety program at Providence Medical Center

Drivers can refine their driving skills and learn safe, defensive driving techniques in an eight-hour refresher course offered at Saint John Medical Plaza.

Saint John has joined with the American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) to offer this AARP Driver Safety Program.

The course will be held on Saturday, April 13 and Saturday, April 20 from 8 a.m. to Noon in the Keenan Education Center at Providence Medical Center, 8929 Parallel Parkway, Kansas City, Kan.

The AARP Driver Safety Program is designed to meet the specific needs of older drivers. Through discussion, audiovisuals and written material, the course covers age‑related physical changes, declining perceptual skills, rules of the road, local driving problems and license renewal requirements.

The course teaches preventive measures to use when driving that can save lives.

The course teaches seniors about how to handle adverse driving conditions and traffic hazards in addition to learning about the effects of aging and medication on driving. All participants who attend and participate in both sessions will receive certification.

Participants who take this course will also be eligible for a discount on their auto insurance mandated by the state of Kansas.

The cost of the program is $12 for AARP members/spouses and $14 for non members. Preregistration is required. All checks should be made payable to AARP and brought to the first class.

To register for the AARP Driver Safety Program, please call 913-281-7777 or 1-800-281-7777.
