UG receives award from FEMA

News Release

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- In an effort to offset the rising cost in flood insurance premiums under the 2012 Flood Insurance Reform Act, in 2013 the Unified Government qualified for the Community Rating System (CRS) under the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP).

The CRS program awards communities that go above the minimum standards of the NFIP to reduce flood damages, strengthen and support the insurance aspects of the NFIP, and encourage a comprehensive approach to floodplain management.

The property owners in our community will benefit by reduced flood insurance premiums and our community's awareness of flood issues.

The UG currently holds the highest rank and largest discount offered in cities located in Kansas and Missouri; 20 percent for properties within the special flood hazard area and 10 percent for properties not within a special flood hazard area.

The anticipate savings for our community this year is over $65,000average of approximately $232 per annual policy.

In recognition of the community's efforts, FEMA presented a plaque to UG Mayor/CEO Mark Holland at a recent board of commissioners meeting.
