KCKCC blanks JCCC 2-0 in opening of new soccer field

By ALAN HOSKINS

The Blue Devils of Coach Ruben Rodriguez wrote the perfect script for the opening of the new Kansas City Kansas Community College soccer field Wednesday –a 2-0 whitewashing of long-time nemesis and arch-rival Johnson County.

The win in the opener was the first for Rodriguez over the Cavaliers.

“We’ve had a tie or two but this was my first win,” said Rodriguez, who is in his fourth year as head coach after four seasons as an assistant. “It was a great start. We played well.”

Two freshmen scored the goals, Erick Rodriguez of KCK, and Chris Brown of Arlington, Tex., while a third freshman, Jesus Aguirre of KCK, got the shutout in goal.

Unfortunately, the second year Lady Blue Devils were not as successful, dropping a 5-0 decision in a game played in temperatures that neared the 100 degree mark.

Both teams are back in action Friday as the women host Hesston at 5 p.m. with the men kicking off under the lights at 7 p.m. It’s the second of five straight home doubleheaders for the Blue Devil teams.

Allen County comes in Saturday, Sept. 7, at 2 and 4 p.m. followed by Southwest Illinois Sunday, Sept. 8, and Blue River Tuesday, Sept. 10. Each of those have 1 and 3 p.m. starts.
