Sly James, KCMO declared winner of Harvesters contest

KANSAS CITY, KAN. --- Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Sly James was declared the winner of the "Return of the Border Wars:  Competition for the Greater Good."

During the week-long Harvesters food drive challenge held during MLS All-Star Week, Harvesters bins traveled along with a 30-foot inflatable soccer jersey to locations on both sides of the state line to bring awareness to the Soccer Week events.

Missouri collected 1,631 meals; Kansas collected 1,069 meals.

"Although we fell short on the challenge to Mayor James, we're excited that once again, we were able to work together to benefit the entire Kansas City region by collecting canned food and raise money for Harvesters and the many people they help in our community," said Unified Government Mayor/CEO Mark Holland.

Holland and Kansas City, Mo., Mayor Pro Tem Cindy Circo, in James’ absence, kicked off the competition on June 24 by donating the first canned goods at a "Soccer Week" kick-off event at Memorial Hall in Kansas City, Kan.

The jersey and collection bins were positioned throughout the week at both City Halls, the Power & Light District, Barney Allis Plaza, Wyandotte High School, a T-Bones game, The Legends Shopping Outlets and Schlitterbahn.

Holland will concede to Mayor James when he delivers James’ favorite Kansas City barbecue to his office at City Hall later this month.
