KCKCC's Gonzalez Jayhawk Volleyball Player of the Week

By ALAN HOSKINS

Kansas City Kansas Community College freshman Jasdel Gonzalez has been named Jayhawk Conference/Verizon Wireless Player of the Week.

A 5-8 outside hitter from Caguas, Puerto Rico, Gonzalez was selected Division II Player of the Week for her play in leading the Lady Blue to five wins including four in a sweep of the Highland Tournament. In those five games, Gonzalez had 55 kills, 34 digs, three aces and a .320 hitting percentage.

Also nominated for National Player of the Week, Gonzalez is only the second Blue Devil to receive the award in at least 10 years. Two years ago, Lisa Angello was named National Player of the Week.

“Jasdel is very dynamic with great vertical jumping ability and a quick arm swing,” said Coach Mary Bruno. “We’re really proud. This is a great accomplishment for her, especially as a freshman, and a great team award because the recognition would never have come were we not 5-0 for the week.”

Gasdel was one of two freshmen recruited by Bruno while taking in a Showcase Tournament in Puerto Rico. The other, Andrea Aparcio, is a defensive specialist on a Lady Blue Devil team that is 7-3 heading into at Jayhawk Conference match at Fort Scott today.
