Five-year-old girl dies in fire

KANSAS CITY, KAN. --- A five-year-old girl died in a house fire Sunday morning in Kansas City, Kan.

The Kansas City, Kan., Fire Department reported to the 4600 Block of Greeley Ave. at around 4:15 a.m. Sunday.

Firefighters discovered the girl near a bedroom in the back of the home. She was taken to a hospital, but later died.

There were two survivors of the fire - a grandmother in the child's seven-year-old sibling. They were transported to the hospital, but are expected to recover.

One firefighter was also injured, but suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Here's the full statement from the KCK Fire Department:
Crews on the scene within 3 minutes reported heavy fire coming from the rear and center sections of a one story wood framed residential structure. Crews were informed that the structure was occupied. During primary search crews located one victim in or near a bedroom located towards the rear of the structure.

Victim was transported emergency to KUMC. Crews were informed other occupants had self evacuated. Home was occupied at the time by one adult female, and two female children ages 7 and 5. Patient who was transported emergency was the 5 year old female who succumbed to the injuries received in fire. Adult female and 7 year old female were transported to area hospital non emergency for evaluation.

Crews had fire under control within 45 minutes. BPU called to shut off utilities to structure. Fire Investigator responded to scene. Pre fire value of structure $50,000. Estimated damage to structure $40,000, contents loss $10,000. Name of victim and other occupants are not being released until all family has been notified. One firefighter received 2nd attempts.
