KCKCC women win 1-0; Cloud edges men 3-2

By ALAN HOSKINS

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- Kansas City Kansas Community College’s young women’s soccer team wrote a bizarre ending to the Lady Blue Devils’ final Jayhawk Conference home game of the season Tuesday, winning 1-0 when Cloud County accidentally kicked a ball into its own net for the game’s only goal.

Claudia Rivera got the shutout in goal for KCKCC despite suffering a shoulder injury in the final 20 minutes. The win boosted the Blue Devils to 3-6-2 in conference play and kept their hopes alive for a post-season playoff berth in only their second competitive season.

The Blue Devil men are also 3-6-2 after dropping a 3-2 decision to Cloud. Guilherme Ribeiro and Leonardo Palacio scored KCKCC’s goals while Kerbson Luben, Alexander Kuntz and Gefte Blanc.

Ironically, the split left both Blue Devil teams tied with Independence for seventh place with 11 points. KCKCC has two conference games remaining – at Cowley County Saturday and at Neosho County Oct  20. Both teams close out their home season against Maple Woods Friday, Oct. 18, at 4 and 6 p.m.
