No. 1 Cowley rallies to edge No. 19 KCKCC in five sets

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Kansas City Kansas Community Colleges 19th ranked Lady Blue Devils gave No. 1 ranked Cowley its biggest Jayhawk Conference scare of the season Wednesday before the Lady Tigers rallied for a five-set win in a fiercely fought battle at the KCKCC Field House.

The Blue Devils led twice, winning the opening match 25-23 and the third set 25-23 after Cowley won 25-19 in the second.

But Cowley got back even 25-20 and then won the fifth and deciding set 15-10. The win kept Cowley unbeaten in the Jayhawk and tied for first with No. 3 ranked Johnson County heading into a winner take all showdown at Cowley next Wednesday.

The loss dropped KCKCC (17-1) into a tie for fourth in Region VI at 6-3 and fifth in the Jayhawk (5-3) with two matches to go.

The Blue Devils return to action Monday when they host Coffeyville and at 6:30 p.m. and then finish conference play at Labette Wednesday. They’ll close out their home season Tuesday, Nov. 5, against Longview before heading into the Region VI playoffs.
