KCKCC Jazz Program Prepares for Annual Concert

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- The Kansas City Kansas Community College jazz bands will be coming together next week for their annual fall concert.

The concert is at 7 p.m. Nov. 18 in the performing arts center on the KCKCC campus, 7250 State Ave. A $5 donation is being requested, which will go toward the fundraising efforts to send a 19-piece jazz band to Cuba in December 2014.

Five groups will be performing during the concert. This includes the Jazz Band, Little Big Band, two jazz combos and the Latin Band. T-shirts and CDs will also be on sale during the concert. Proceeds from the product sales will also go toward future travel expenses.

Directed by Jim Mair, associate professor of music at KCKCC, the instrumental groups perform between 75 and 100 times each year.

These performances include those on campus as well as throughout the Kansas City community, and since 1999, the KCKCC instrumental groups have consistently received top ratings at festivals. The jazz program was also recently invited to play at the 2014 Havana International Jazz Festival in Havana, Cuba.

The group’s invitation is based of its long reputation as one of the top community college jazz ensembles in the country.
