KCKCC women's basketball team improves to 16-1; both teams home Monday

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Kansas City Kansas Community College’s No. 9 ranked Lady Blue Devils will have no time to rest after an 80-46 win at Allen County Saturday night.

Both the Lady Blue Devils and Blue Devil men, who fell 72-60 at Allen County, will be home today against Wentworth Military Academy with games at 5 and 7 p.m.

Jumping out to a 41-24 halftime lead behind 53.3 percent shooting, the KCKCC women won their ninth in a row while increasing their record to 16-1 – the only loss coming at the hands of No. 1 ranked North Iowa Community College 91-87.

Janai Mitchell led the Lady Blue Devils with a career high 21 points, seven rebounds and five assists. Hitting 7-of-9 shots from the field and 7-of-8 free throws, Mitchell became the eighth Lady Blue Devil to lead the scoring in a game.

Bailey West added 17 points and nine rebounds, Iland Shurn 15 points and seven rebounds and Julia Garrard 13 points and eight rebounds while Cassidy Harbert led in assists with six. Defensively, KCKCC limited Allen to 27.8 percent shooting, forced 22 turnovers and had a 48-31 rebound advantage.

Allen County’s 41-30 rebound domination and 53.6 percent second half shooting was too much for the smaller Blue Devils to overcome in the 72-60 men’s loss. Trailing 31-22 at the half, KCKCC shot 53.8 percent the second half but couldn’t overcome 24 percent the first half.

Lucas Smith led with 14 points and six rebounds while Clay Young added 13 points, Collin Adney 9 and Anthony Ridley 8. The loss left the Blue Devils at 5-12.
