Lady Blue Devils overcome slow start for 66-50 win

By ALAN HOSKINS

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- No. 8 ranked Kansas City Kansas Community College didn’t score from the field in nearly 8½ minutes Monday night but still put 37 first half points on the board on the way to a 66-50 win over Benedictine College’s JV.

The win wrapped up the Lady Blue Devils’ non-conference season with an 18-2 record heading into Jayhawk Conference Division II play Wednesday at Johnson County at 5:30 and 7:30 p.m.

The women’s opener shapes up as a classic matchup of two of the top two teams in the nation – No. 2 Johnson County (19-0) vs. No. 8 KCKCC.

It will be the first of two top ranked opponents this week for the Lady Blue Devils, who play at No. 5 Highland Saturday at 1 p.m.

It will also be KCKCC’s third game against a Top Five team. One of KCKCC’s two losses was to No. 1 North Iowa 91-87.

Missing their first 12 shots, the Lady Blue Devils dug themselves a 15-3 hole before Cassidy Harbert broke the drought with a 3-point goal with 11:33 left in the first half and Bailey West drained two more treys as KCKCC closed to 18-18 with 6:50 left and went ahead to stay on two Imani White layups.

Balance was again a key as nine of 11 Blue Devils scored. Rashaun Casey led with 14 points. West added 11 points and eight rebounds, Julia Garrard 10 points and eight rebounds and Harbert seven points, eight rebounds and seven assists.
