KCKCC softball team out-battles Ottawa, weather

By ALAN HOSKINS

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Despite the worst of elements, the Kansas City Kansas Community College women’s softball team got the 2014 season off in winning fashion with a doubleheader sweep at Ottawa Wednesday.

“In one inning, we had rain, hail and sleet,” said KCKCC Coach Kacy Tillery, whose Lady Blue Devils won 6-3 and 8-0. Weather permitting, the Blue Devils are scheduled to open their home season Saturday when they host a club team from Kansas State at noon and 2 p.m.

Leslie Ford pitched a 5-hitter and helped her own cause with a double and single in the opening 6-3 win. Amanda Holroyd also had a double and single and two runs batted in and Lacey Santiago singled in a pair of runs.

Justice Scales swung the big bat in the 5-inning second game, driving in five runs with a single, double and triple. Mierra Morisette added three RBI on a single and double, Santiago singled three times and Holroyd doubled and singled for all of KCKCC’s nine hits.

The big assault made a winner out of Elizabeth Seimears, who scattered five hits, struck out one and walked none.

Should Saturday’s opener be wiped out, the Blue Devils’ home opener will come March 1 against North Central followed by Neosho County March 4 and Ottawa March 5.
