KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- The Kansas City, Kan., Martin Luther King, Jr. National Holiday Celebration Committee awarded Bishop Ward seniors Dani Braun, Elizabeth Gilbert, Lesslie Martinez, Kendall Nick, and Donovan Watts $600 college scholarships.

The awards were presented on Jan. 19 at the Jack Reardon Civic Center.

Local community leader and Bishop Ward alumna, Barbara Bailey ’67, joined in the celebration to recognize these students during a recent visit to Bishop Ward.

Ms. Bailey noted that she “was especially proud to see so many Bishop Ward students competing for these scholarships and hope this tradition continues. It is high praise for Bishop Ward as it exemplifies Dr. King’s ideals and dreams.”

Student recipient, Kendall Nick, echoed Ms. Bailey’s sentiments.

"I am very grateful for this opportunity. Writing the essay was a learning experience and worthwhile because the scholarship will help with tuition at the University of Saint Mary in Leavenworth next fall where I will play volleyball and study Physical Therapy."
