Emporia man sentenced to more than 8 years for mistreatment of dependent adult

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- An Emporia man was sentenced today to more than eight years in prison for mistreatment of a dependent adult and conspiring to mistreat a dependent adult, Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt said.

Rick Miller, 60, was sentenced to 98 months in the Kansas Department of Corrections and fined $200,000 by Judge W. Lee Fowler in Lyon County District Court.

KCKCC Celebrates ESOL Graduation

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- It was a special day Tuesday when 20 students from Kansas City Kansas Community College’s ESOL program were recognized for completing all ESOL classes needed for their academic or professional goals.

“I am very proud and happy for them,” said Liz Holloway, instructor and coordinator of KCKCC’s ESOL program. “Some of these students have been with us together as a class for four semesters. Most of them are continuing studies in academic classes or TEC programs here at KCKCC, and many of them have overcome many obstacles to continue their education.”

The goal of the ESOL program is to help those who need to improve their English skills. Students can choose academic ESOL or adult basic education ESL classes, depending on their current fluency and personal goals. After being admitted to KCKCC, students are tested using the COMPASS ESL placement test.

Kansas State University Marching Band named best in the land

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- The Pride of Wildcat Land, the Kansas State University Marching Band, has been recognized as the best marching band in the nation.

The band has received the Sudler Trophy, which is given every two years to recognize the top marching band in the U.S.
 Frank Tracz, professor of music and the university's director of bands, received the award Friday at the McCormick Place Convention Center in Chicago.

Four Wyandotte County students receive academic honor from Washburn University

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Washburn University has released the names of students who were named to the fall semester President's Honor Roll.

To be named to the list, a student must be enrolled in at least 12 graded semester credit hours and attain a semester grade point average of 4.0.

KCKCC Human Resources Director Making Plans for Retirement

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- Cheryl Coleman might not have been at Kansas City Kansas Community College for a long time, but as she prepares for retirement, there is quite a bit she will miss about the community college.

“I will miss the staff and faculty here at the college,” said the human resources director at KCKCC. “I have learned a lot and enjoyed working with everyone.”

Cheryl has been director of human resources at KCKCC, for the last five years.

Prior to coming to college, she was the director of human resources for 18 years at Swope Parkway Health Center and spent three years at MAST Ambulance.
