The Kansas Republican caucuses in Wyandotte County and state-wide continued a trend among the Republican Party’s presidential nomination battle in 2012.

While former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney may be the favorite, he’s still not earning the trust of conservatives and Republicans in Middle America.

Former U.S. Sen. Rick Santorum easily won the Kansas caucuses – winning 51 percent of the vote to 21 percent for Romney.

Former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich earned 14 percent of the vote, while U.S. Rep. Ron Paul finished last among the big contenders with 14 percent.

In Wyandotte County, the margin was even larger.

Santorum won 59 percent of the vote, while Romney won 15 percent of it. He edged out Paul by just one vote for second place.

The number of Republicans in Wyandotte County who voted was 457.

Estimations show that Santorum will claim 33 of Kansas' 40 delegates.

In terms of numbers, below are the results from Wyandotte County from this past weekend’s Republican presidential caucuses across Kansas.
  • Rick Santorum: 271
  • Mitt Romney: 67
  • Ron Paul: 66
  • Newt Gingrich: 53
State-wide, Republican turnout was heavier than it was in the 2008 GOP caucuses.

In 2008, just over 19,000 Republicans voted in Kansas. In 2012, the number jumped to 29,605 voters.
