Time to give Piper High School some love, too

By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com

We had a post earlier this week about Sumner Academy being named the top school in Kansas by three separate news magazines or studies.

However, there's another high school in Kansas City, Kan., that deserves respect and a lot of credit for recent success.

Piper High School, along with the entire Piper School District, continues to meet and excel in state testing standards. It's one of the few districts that hasn't had a school placed "on improvement" during the No Child Left Behind era.

Now, in their own way, Piper High School students and faculty members can say they're number one in the Kansas City metro area.

If you combine the 2012 math and reading state assessments scores taken by students at Piper High School, they are the top school on the Kansas side in the Kansas City metro area.

The numbers:

1. Piper 197.2
2. Basehor-Linwood 195.9
3. Blue Valley  195.2
4. Blue Valley West 192.4
5. Mill Valley  191.4
6. Shawnee Mission East   191.4
7. Olathe Northwest 191.3
8. Blue Valley North  191.2
9. Shawnee Mission Northwest   190.8
10. Sumner Academy   189.7

While these numbers may not be good enough to be recognized by a magazine, they're good enough to be recognized by all in Wyandotte County.

The Piper School District is one of the great success stories in Wyandotte County and this is just another example.

When you consider that Piper is among the school districts that receive the least amount of state funding, it's even more impressive.
