Outstanding new teacher award to KCKCC-TEC's George Crump

By ALAN HOSKINS

George Crump has been presented a 2012 Outstanding New Teacher Award by the Kansas Council for Workforce Education.

An instructor in the Electrical Technology Program at the Technical Education Center at Kansas City Kansas Community College, the award was presented to Crump at the Council’s annual conference at Butler County Community College in El Dorado.

The award recognizes a faculty member who cannot have more than five years of teaching and has demonstrated outstanding teaching abilities and dedicated commitment to career and technical education while exemplifying exceptional teaching and student engagement skills within and/or outside the classroom.

Hired at the inception of the Electrical Technology Program, Crump wrote the curriculum, selected textbooks and equipment and developed an advisory committee.

In addition to the core curriculum, students have learned the fundamentals of solar energy, wind energy and residential efficiencies on saving energy.

Crump’s students are also annual participants in the SkillsUSA competition as well as undertaking community service projects including assisting senior citizens or low-income families with electrical projects and wiring homes built by Habitat for Humanity.

“Not only do these students receive an excellent foundation in electrical technology, they benefit by receiving advising, counseling and mentoring from a true professional,” said Donna Kelley Shawn, KCWE President

Instructors are nominated for the award by their colleagues with nominations judged by a panel of distinguished but anonymous judges.

A state forum for faculty and administrators in career and technical education as well as workforce development, the Kansas Council for Workforce Education also provides critical information and professional development to members on best practices, initiatives and current, as well as, future trends.
