The crime rate continues to drop in Kansas City, Kan.

The Kansas City, Kan., Police Department released its "end of year" statistics Friday afternoon.

According to the department, the overall crime rate in KCK dropped by 6.5 percent in 2012 compared to a year ago. Along with the drop in overall crime, there was a larger drop in the violent crime and homicide rates.

Homicides decreased by 18 percent from 2011 to 2012. Violent crime was down eight percent.

"We believe that our joint efforts in sharing information both internally and externally, the Crime Strategy Process and our initiatives in community interaction and problem solving, to name a few, have made a difference in combating violent crime in the Community," said KCK Police Department Sergeant Emmett Lockridge.

Lockridge said the department will build on the success in 2013.
