Barnes latest to file for vacant seat

By NICK SLOAN, nick@kansascitykansan.com

Former Unified Government Commissioner Nathan Barnes has filed for the vacant UG At-Large District 1 seat.

Barnes chose not to run for re-election in his district in 2013, instead focusing on the 2013 mayoral race.

Barnes finished a close third place to fellow commissioners Mark Holland and Ann Murguia in the primary. After the primary loss, Barnes chose to endorse Murguia's campaign.

Of the now six candidates so far who have declared, Barnes would bring a possible advantage in experience.

He served on the UG board from 1997-2013.

He joins Mark Gilstrap, Kelly Kultala, Don Budd Jr., Jarvis Collier and Robert Milan Jr. as candidates who have filed as of Tuesday afternoon.

The deadline is Friday at 5 p.m.
