Following an emotional pregame, the Wichita Wingnuts used two big innings and a strong pitching performance to beat the Kansas City T-Bones 8-0 in the 2013 regular season opener at Lawrence Dumont Stadium on Thursday night.

After the Wingnuts honored former bench coach Brian Rose, who lost a battle with cancer earlier this year, Wichita got a solid start out of Jon Link (1-0), who held the T-Bones to only three hits and didn’t allow a walk in 7 innings.

Leading 1-0 heading into the bottom of the third, Wichita pulled away with three runs in each of the next two innings against Kansas City starter Shaun Garceau (0-1).

This was just the fourth time in Garceau’s last 17 starts that he allowed more than three runs.

Kennard Jones, making his regular-season debut for Kansas City, had two of the T-Bones’ five hits in the contest.

The T-Bones complete the Wichita portion of this home-and-home series on Friday night, with Aaron Meade scheduled for the 7:05 first pitch.

Kansas City’s home opener is on Saturday against the Wingnuts. Tickets are available by calling the Providence Medical Center Box Office at Community America Ballpark at 913-328-5618.
