Shepherd’s Center of KCK announces Spring 2014 Creative Class schedule

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- The Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas will offer a variety of creative/ life-long learning classes this Spring. There is still time to sign up for one of our fun and informative classes.

All classes except for the digital literacy/beginning computers classes have a small fee to participate. Call the Shepherd’s Center at 913-281-8908 to sign up for any or all of these classes.

Plastic Canvas, taught by Betty Lloyd, will begin on Tuesday, Mar. 4 and run through April 8; 10 a.m.-noon at University United Methodist, 3148 Parallel

Knit One, Purl Too, taught by Joan Daniels, will begin on Saturday, March 1 and will meet March 8, March 29 and one additional date to be announced; 10 a.m. to noon at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd Street.

Quilting, taught by Geraldine Strader, will begin on Wednesday, March 5 and run eight straight weeks, through April 23; 10 a.m. to noon at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel.

Scrapbook and Card Making Class, taught by Nancy Kurtz will begin on Thursday, March 13 and run five sessions, every other Thursday (March 13, 27, April 10, 24 and May 8) from 9 a.m. to noon at Nancy’s home (address will be provided to those who sign up).

This class would be fun for learning to organize family photos and mementos.

TALK Books Series (sponsored by the Kansas Humanities Council) Volunteer coordinator: Jean Brown
Books are available for loan at the Shepherd’s Center office.

All discussions will be held the first Wednesday of the month March through June, from 1-3 p.m. at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel.

The TALK Books schedule is:
  • March 5 – Alan Lubert will discuss The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd
  • April 2 – Trish Reeves will lead The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
  • May 7 – Sister Rosie Kolich will lead My Last Days of Roy Rogers by Pat Cunningham
  • June 4 – Judith Richards will lead The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night by Mark Haddon
Beginning Computer Classes – FREE! Our first session is being offered in Spanish.

This is a four week class, once a week beginning on Tuesday, February 18 through Tuesday, March 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Grandview Park Presbyterian, 1613 Wilson Blvd.

The class will cover: basic computer skills, basic Internet skills, setting up an email account, learning the basics of social media. A free meal will begin at 6:30 pm each class night.

Additional free computer classes will be offered soon; these classes are offered as a partnership with Trinity Community Church, and are the result of a grant received to help residents become more computer literate.
