Shepherd’s Center of KCK’s Next Chapter Kansas City program presents: Aligning Passion and Purpose in the Next Chapter of Life

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- “Aligning Passion and Purpose in the Next Chapter of Life” is a Life Planning class for persons who would enjoy exploring options for work, service, and learning. You will have the opportunity to explore, evaluate, and experience the thinking and tools that will assist you in achieving a productive and satisfying life, or transition from retirement to your “Next Chapter”.

This is a non-financial class; in other words, we aren’t selling you financial services, we are equipping you with tools you can use to enjoy a rich and productive retirement!

Dates: 
 Two Wednesdays, November 5 and 12 from 9am to noon.  Plan to attend both dates. (This is a two-session, six-hour course.)

Cost: $20 per person/ $10 for Next Chapter Kansas City members

Adventures in Learning to be held Friday, June 20 at Grace Lutheran

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Adventures in Learning, a free program of the Shepherd’s Center of KCK, will take place beginning at 9 a.m. on Friday, June 20 at Grace Lutheran, 3333 Wood Avenue.

The building offers entry-level parking and easy drop off of both people and equipment. Everyone is welcome to attend part or all of the day’s activities. The schedule for Friday, June 20 is:

Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas to hold Used Book and Bric-A-Brac sale

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- The Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kan., will hold its 20th annual Used Book and Bric-A-Brac sale from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday, March 12 and 13 at the Conference Center located on the campus of Kansas City, Kansas Community College.

We will have a large selection of used books and household bric-a-brac for sale. Come and shop for books and bargains.

We will take donations of items beginning at 8am on Tuesday, March 11, at the conference center. The Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas is a 501c3 organization with the IRS, so any donations are tax deductible and tax receipts for donations will be available.

Shepherd’s Center of KCK announces Spring 2014 Creative Class schedule

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- The Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas will offer a variety of creative/ life-long learning classes this Spring. There is still time to sign up for one of our fun and informative classes.

All classes except for the digital literacy/beginning computers classes have a small fee to participate. Call the Shepherd’s Center at 913-281-8908 to sign up for any or all of these classes.

Plastic Canvas, taught by Betty Lloyd, will begin on Tuesday, Mar. 4 and run through April 8; 10 a.m.-noon at University United Methodist, 3148 Parallel

Knit One, Purl Too, taught by Joan Daniels, will begin on Saturday, March 1 and will meet March 8, March 29 and one additional date to be announced; 10 a.m. to noon at the West Wyandotte Library, 1737 N. 82nd Street.

Quilting, taught by Geraldine Strader, will begin on Wednesday, March 5 and run eight straight weeks, through April 23; 10 a.m. to noon at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel.

Scrapbook and Card Making Class, taught by Nancy Kurtz will begin on Thursday, March 13 and run five sessions, every other Thursday (March 13, 27, April 10, 24 and May 8) from 9 a.m. to noon at Nancy’s home (address will be provided to those who sign up).

This class would be fun for learning to organize family photos and mementos.

Books are available for loan at the Shepherd’s Center office.

All discussions will be held the first Wednesday of the month March through June, from 1-3 p.m. at Trinity Community Church, 5010 Parallel.

  • April 2 – Trish Reeves will lead The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini
  • May 7 – Sister Rosie Kolich will lead My Last Days of Roy Rogers by Pat Cunningham
  • June 4 – Judith Richards will lead The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night by Mark Haddon
Beginning Computer Classes – FREE! Our first session is being offered in Spanish.

This is a four week class, once a week beginning on Tuesday, February 18 through Tuesday, March 11 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at Grandview Park Presbyterian, 1613 Wilson Blvd.

The class will cover: basic computer skills, basic Internet skills, setting up an email account, learning the basics of social media. A free meal will begin at 6:30 pm each class night.

Additional free computer classes will be offered soon; these classes are offered as a partnership with Trinity Community Church, and are the result of a grant received to help residents become more computer literate.

Shepherd’s Center to hold Biscuit and Gravy fundraiser breakfast

KANSAS CITY, KAN. --- The Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas will host a biscuit and gravy fundraiser breakfast from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 14 at the Manor Place Senior Apartments, 6016 Leavenworth Road.

The apartment building is located directly north of the Sunset Plaza shopping center at 60th and Leavenworth Road.

Tickets are $8 and will be available at the door. Breakfast will include two biscuits with gravy, hashbrown patty, sausage link, and coffee or juice.

Shepherd's Center of KCK to present "Adventures in Learning" August 16

KANSAS CITY, KAN. --- Adventures in Learning, the free monthly program of the Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kan., will take place Friday, Aug. 16, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church, 3333 Wood Avenue. All are welcome to attend.

This month will feature a potluck picnic lunch and musical entertainment. Attendees are asked to bring a side dish to share with the group. Shepherd’s Center is providing hotdogs.

Designed to celebrate and engage older adults, Adventures in Learning has been providing enrichment, fellowship and a noon meal for more than 27 years in Wyandotte County. Adventures in Learning provides free morning health screenings, selections of informational and educational workshops, and lunch with an entertaining program.

These monthly programs are free and everyone is welcome to attend; join in one workshop or stay for the entire program. Lunch is served at noon for $4. Book sale to benefit Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kansas

The Shepherd's Center of Kansas City, Kansas will host its nineteenth annual used Book & Bric-a-Brac Sale on Wednesday and Thursday, March 13 & 14, 2013 at the Kansas City Kansas Community College Conference Center, 7250 State, KCK from 8 a.m. through 6 p.m.

The sale will include used books as well as items of household decorations, craft items, dishes, costume jewelry, and other miscellaneous items. With the exception of rare editions and coffee-table books, all books will be sold at $.50 for paperbacks and $1 for hardbacks.

This will be an opportunity for browsing, enjoying and discovering a book you’d like to read, or buying a special item for your home while supporting the Shepherd's Center.

Anyone wishing to donate items may bring them to the Conference Center from 8 a.m. until noon on Tuesday, March 12th, or call the Shepherd’s Center Office in advance of that date to arrange for a pick-up. Please no used clothing, magazines, or Readers Digest condensed books.

Biscuits & Gravy Fundraiser for Shepherd's Center Saturday

Biscuits and gravy will be the fare Saturday morning for a fund-raiser at Kansas City Kansas Community College for Shepherd’s Center of Kansas City, Kan.

From 7-11 a.m., two biscuits with gravy, a hash brown patty, sausage links, juice and coffee will be served in the Conference Center adjacent to the Campus Lake at the south end of the college campus at 7250 State Ave. The cost is $8 with additional biscuits and gravy available for $1 each.

Those arriving between 8 and 9:30 a.m., will have an opportunity to meet and visit with a KCK original, Bill Hurrelbrink of WDAF Channel 4 Action News.

All proceeds will go to The Shepherd’s Center of KCK, an interfaith, multicultural non-profit organization that promotes and supports successful aging.

The Center provides 15 services that reach more than 1,200 people in Wyandotte County, focusing on health enrichment, education and home services.
