SPORTS: Derek Sykes' 20 points leads way as Sumner Academy wins opener

A report from Sumner Academy:
KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- Sumner Academy Sabres Varsity Boys Basketball emerged victorious 52-46 against Smithville High School this past Friday on the strength of Derek Sykes, who scored 20 points. Sumner Academy sealed their victory in the fourth quarter on a free throw from Sykes.  
Sumner Academy came back with a vengeance in the second half, despite being outplayed by Smithville High School during the first half of the game.  
Sumner Academy had a solid finish, adding 19 points in the final quarter.  
Sykes led Sumner Academy's offense, going 7-for-14 (50%) from the field while also sinking 100% (4-for-4) of free throws attempted. 
Also contributing for Sumner Academy were Jalen Taylor (9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks), Shaun Rainey (8 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal), Theron Sanders (5 points, 1 rebound), Brandon Byers (4 points), Vance Jackson (3 points, 3 rebounds) and Saadique Perkins (3 points, 1 block). Sumner Academy finished the game with 28 rebounds (eight offensive/20 defensive), three blocks and one steal.  
Thursday the Sabres will travel to play a 1st round game of the Blue Valley Tournament versus Lee’s Summit North.  
Tip off is at 8:30 pm.
