KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- Valentine’s Day proved to be a Holliday for the UMKC men’s basketball team on Saturday afternoon, as senior forward Reese Holliday scored a season-high 19 points in a 61-50 road win at Chicago State, making it six wins in the last eight games.
The victory completed a season-sweep for the ‘Roos over CSU, and it also helped them surpass their win total from a year ago, the most since 2011 at UMKC.
“Our defense was pretty good today, we had a couple lapses but I was really pleased,” Head Coach Kareem Richardson said. “I thought, especially Thad (Smith) started us off well on defense, getting four blocks. Frank (Williams) did a good job of talking defensively as well.”

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Sumner Academy falls to Piper at home
The Sabres fell off early, trailing 38-34 by the half after scoring a game-high 19 points during the second quarter. Both teams were very physical on the court, with Sumner picking up 27 fouls, while Piper had 23.
Perkins found success all over the court for the Sabres, making 50 percent (3-for-6) of shots attempted while also sinking 92 percent (11-for-12) of free throws attempted.

HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS: Sumner Academy falls to Blue Valley Southwest in final of Spring Hill Invitational
The Sabres got off to a very slow start, only scoring 10 points in the first 16 minutes, finding themselves down 10 - 30 at the halfway point.
Perkins was the front runner for the Sumner Academy offense with 15 points, including eight during the third period.
Fellow freshman De'Auan McClaine put up three three-pointers and scored nine points total.
Also contributing for the Sabres were Derek Sykes (7 points, 4 rebounds, 1 block), Marvin Ellis (3 points) and Shaun Rainey (2 points, 4 rebounds). Sumner Academy finished the game with 23 rebounds (11 offensive/12 defensive), one block and two steals.
Next up, Sumner Academy will play host to rival Piper on Tuesday.

SPORTS: Sumner Academy opens Spring Hill Tournament with a win
Sumner Academy grabbed the lead against Eisenhower on a two-pointer from Derek Sykes in the second period and held on.
Sumner pulled ahead early, claiming a 26-23 lead at the half. The Sabres offense was led by Sykes, who scored 18 points, including seven during the first period.

BASEHOR, KAN. — In a potential sub-state preview game, the Basehor-Linwood Bobcats girls basketball team was defeated by Sumner Academy in a dramatic 45-44 game.
Madison McDowell played a great game, scoring 18 points and grabbing 6 rebounds.
Through the first three quarters, it was a game of runs.
Similarly to their opening game in Bonner Springs, the Lady Bobcats played a great opening quarter on the defensive side of the ball. They forced turnovers and scored the first four points of the game.
Two baskets from Quinnlyn Walcott resulted in four of Basehor-Linwood's nine opening first quarter points. After a slow start, the Lady Sabres climbed back into the game and closed the quarter out on a 5-0 run to grab a 13-9 lead.
The Lady Bobcats' defense, along with a mix of sloppy offense by the Lady Sabres, led to an eight-point halftime lead.
Basehor-Linwood scored 12 of the half's final 14 points. McDowell scored eight points in the quarter, outscoring Sumner Academy's entire team by three points.

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- Sumner Academy Sabres Varsity Boys Basketball emerged victorious 52-46 against Smithville High School this past Friday on the strength of Derek Sykes, who scored 20 points. Sumner Academy sealed their victory in the fourth quarter on a free throw from Sykes.
Sumner Academy came back with a vengeance in the second half, despite being outplayed by Smithville High School during the first half of the game.
Sumner Academy had a solid finish, adding 19 points in the final quarter.
Sykes led Sumner Academy's offense, going 7-for-14 (50%) from the field while also sinking 100% (4-for-4) of free throws attempted.
Also contributing for Sumner Academy were Jalen Taylor (9 points, 2 rebounds, 2 blocks), Shaun Rainey (8 points, 7 rebounds, 1 steal), Theron Sanders (5 points, 1 rebound), Brandon Byers (4 points), Vance Jackson (3 points, 3 rebounds) and Saadique Perkins (3 points, 1 block). Sumner Academy finished the game with 28 rebounds (eight offensive/20 defensive), three blocks and one steal.
Thursday the Sabres will travel to play a 1st round game of the Blue Valley Tournament versus Lee’s Summit North.

Former Sumner Academy, KCKCC basketball star to play at Northwest Missouri

Kansas City Kansas Community College Female Athlete of the Year Alexandria Blaurock gambled and won.
With other colleges dangling offers, Blaurock waited out the hiring of a new coach to complete her goal of continuing her basketball career at Northwest Missouri University in Warrensburg.
“One of my friend’s brothers played football at Northwest and I started going to football games in ninth grade,” said Blaurock, a graduate of Sumner Academy.
That interest carried right on through the basketball seasons.
“I had my mind set on the school. I really like the town, watched them play, felt comfortable and thought I would fit in.
“Then the former coach left and I had to wait out another three weeks for them to hire a new coach so I waited and gambled that he would like me and he did.”

Pirates pound the rock, pound Sabres in 48-13 victory

The Piper Pirates offense is generally one of the most balanced offenses in Kansas City, Kan.
They didn't need balance tonight, as the Pirates ran for 500 yards against the Sumner Academy Sabres in Thursday's 48-13 win on the road.
Improving to 6-2 on the season and 2-0 in district play, Piper jumped out to a quick start offensively.
After holding Sumner Academy to a three and out to begin the game, Piper's rushing game went to work.
Piper's first score of the game came from Matt McDonald. McDonald was the sole offensive provider on the first drive of the game - rushing the ball twice for 36 yards, capping the short drive with a 27-yard touchdown.
Sumner Academy's offense would respond. Quarterback Brandon Williams found Jowell Daniels on a deep pass. However, Sumner's field goal attempt four plays later would be blocked by the Piper defensive line.
Piper's rushing attack continued to plow through the Sumner line on the second drive.

Sumner Academy wins 4A forensics state title

The Sumner Academy forensics team earned a state title over the weekend.
The Sabres won the 4A state forensics championship, their second overall and their first since 1998.
Sumner Academy's debaters used a strong finish beginning in round three. After scoring 56 and 58 points in the opening two rounds, the Sabres scored 67 points in round three, 70 in the semfinals and 83 in the finals to win going away by 70 points.
Tonganoxie finished in second place.
Among other local schools, Piper finished 9th in the state.
