2,000 used books on sale at KCKCC April 16-18

The book bargain of the year comes off at Kansas City Kansas Community College Tuesday through Thursday, April 16-18 – the 3rd annual “My Shelf to Yours at KCKCC” used book sale.

A fund-raiser for scholarships, more than 2,000 books will be on sale Tuesday from 8:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. and 5:30-7:30 p.m. and Wednesday and Thursday from 8 a.m.-4 p.m. in the Intercultural Center on the lower level of the Jewell Center on the KCKCC campus at 7250 State Avenue.

A student-operated bookstore, “My Shelf to Yours at KCKCC” raises funds through the sale of used books for scholarships and textbooks for active members of the International Student Organization (ISO), Student Organization of Latinos (SOL) and Enactus (formerly Students for Free Enterprise).

In its three years, the program has assisted 170 students with 440 textbooks and $6,350 in tuition scholarships. More than 27,000 books have been donated by KCKCC staff, faculty and students as well as community members.

Books will sell for $1 each or seven for $5 and anyone spending $5 will receive a free ticket for a KCKCC Bookstore gift certificate. In addition, there will be a raffle of a Kindle Fire for $1 per ticket or seven for $5; a silent auction; and a sale of jewelry, crafts, snacks and beverages.

“My Shelf to Yours” was established in June 2010 by Jeanne Crane-Smith, Director of Emerging Workforce, as a student-operated bookstore to promote scholarship, leadership, entrepreneurship and sustainability. The used books are then put up for sale on-line and at KCKCC with proceeds going for scholarships and purchase of textbooks for students who otherwise could not afford them.

At the end of the semester, textbooks are returned to a lending library at the Intercultural Center for use by other students in financial need.

Also, donated books that are unsold are then either swapped or donated to other non-profit organizations for finding “new homes.” 

Huge book sale next week to assist KCKCC students

More than 3,000 used books will be on sale at the My Shelf To Yours At KCKCC fund-raiser at Kansas City Kansas Community College Wednesday and Thursday, October 17-18.

The sale will be held next Wednesday from 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., and Thursday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Intercultural Center on the lower level of the Jewell Building on the KCKCC campus at 7250 State Avenue.

All books will be $1. Or, you can buy seven books for $5. All profits will be placed into a student scholarship fund for textbooks and tuition for members in financial need from three student organizations – International Student Organization (ISO), Student Organization of Latinos (SOL) and Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE).

In addition, there will also be an area outside of the Intercultural Center offering beverages and Krispy Kremes for 50 cents each, an art auction and a fashion jewelry sale, all benefiting the scholarship fund.

As a bonus, anyone spending more than $5 will be automatically entered in a raffle for gift certificates from eBay and the KCKCC Bookstore.

Also, there is going to be a special raffle for the new Kindle Fire HD 8.9” ($1/ticket or seven for $5), to be released in November and already pre-ordered by MSTY for the winner of the November 2nd drawing.

My Shelf To Yours At KCKCC was founded on June 1, 2010 in order to promote scholarship, leadership, entrepreneurship and sustainability by selling donated used books both on-line and on-ground.

The student-operated bookstore has well exceeded its original business plan goals and has earned national recognition from eBay’s Green Team for recycling books to help fellow students in financial need with textbooks and tuition.

They will all be together for the 2^nd Annual “My Shelf to Yours at KCKCC” used book sale at Kansas City Kansas Community College Wednesday and Thursday, April 11-12.
