Huge book sale next week to assist KCKCC students

More than 3,000 used books will be on sale at the My Shelf To Yours At KCKCC fund-raiser at Kansas City Kansas Community College Wednesday and Thursday, October 17-18.

The sale will be held next Wednesday from 8:30 a.m.-7 p.m., and Thursday from 8 a.m.-3 p.m. in the Intercultural Center on the lower level of the Jewell Building on the KCKCC campus at 7250 State Avenue.

All books will be $1. Or, you can buy seven books for $5. All profits will be placed into a student scholarship fund for textbooks and tuition for members in financial need from three student organizations – International Student Organization (ISO), Student Organization of Latinos (SOL) and Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE).

In addition, there will also be an area outside of the Intercultural Center offering beverages and Krispy Kremes for 50 cents each, an art auction and a fashion jewelry sale, all benefiting the scholarship fund.

As a bonus, anyone spending more than $5 will be automatically entered in a raffle for gift certificates from eBay and the KCKCC Bookstore.

Also, there is going to be a special raffle for the new Kindle Fire HD 8.9” ($1/ticket or seven for $5), to be released in November and already pre-ordered by MSTY for the winner of the November 2nd drawing.

My Shelf To Yours At KCKCC was founded on June 1, 2010 in order to promote scholarship, leadership, entrepreneurship and sustainability by selling donated used books both on-line and on-ground.

The student-operated bookstore has well exceeded its original business plan goals and has earned national recognition from eBay’s Green Team for recycling books to help fellow students in financial need with textbooks and tuition.

As of November 1, 2012, My Shelf To Yours At KCKCC has received more than 21,000 donated books from 170 donors and assisted 138 students with 341 textbooks and $4,600 in tuition scholarship.

Any unsold book donations from the October sale will be distributed to KCKCC’s Phi Theta Kappa honor society which sends used textbooks to Africa; KCKCC’s Early Childhood Education program which sells children’s and parenting books at itsr annual garage sale for funding student attendance at educational workshops; and Hillcrest Transitional Housing which assists homeless families with housing and jobs through its proceeds from their area thrift shops.

In addition to the sale of books, My Shelf to Yours At KCKCC is assists two entrepreneurial ventures that will also donate a portion of their proceeds for scholarship:   SIFE’s Brazilian Maté Tea and ME: Crafts, featuring holiday items.
