TRAFFIC: Eastbound I-70 Over 57th Street Bridge Repair Project to Begin in Wyandotte County

Kansas Department of Transportation

Weather permitting, on Monday, May 14, repair and overly work will begin on the 57th Street to eastbound I-70 entrance ramp and on eastbound I-70 over the 57th Street Bridge in Wyandotte County.

Repair work on the project includes patching and overlay on the bridge deck, and replacement of the bridge expansion joints. Ramp bridge work includes joint repair, and patching and overlay work on the bridge deck. Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday during daylight hours.

Beginning at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, May 14, the 57th Street to eastbound I-70 entrance ramp will be closed to all traffic throughout the duration of the project. A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour via Kaw Drive to the 38th Street ramp then back onto eastbound I-70.

Next, beginning at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, May 14, eastbound I-70 will be reduced to one open lane from approximately a half-mile east of the bridge and over the bridge itself as crews complete pavement striping work and set traffic control for the repair project.

Then by 3:00 p.m. that same day, eastbound I-70 will be reduced to two open 11-foot lanes (only one lane will be closed) from approximately a half-mile east of the bridge and over the bridge itself throughout the project duration.

Traffic will be directed through the project via concrete barrier and signage. A 60 mph speed limit will be posted through the project work zone.

Advance message boards will alert traffic to the lane and ramp closures. Updated traffic information for this bridge repair project can be viewed online: www.ksdot.org/kcmetro/laneclose.asp. Drivers should expect some delays, especially during peak morning/evening rush hours, and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.

There will also be repair work on the westbound I-70 over Kaw Drive Bridge sometime in mid-summer 2012. These additional traffic impacts for the project will be provided under separate notification in advance of the planned closures.

PCi Roads, LLC (St. Michael, MN) is the primary contractor on this bridge repair project with a total contract cost of $237,000. The scheduled completion date for the entire project is early August 2012, weather permitting.

This project is funded by T-WORKS, the transportation program passed by the Kansas Legislature in May 2010. Find out more about this and other T-WORKS projects at: http://kdotapp.ksdot.org/TWorks/.
