KANSAS CITY METRO TRAFFIC ALERT: Pavement Reconstrution Project from 4th Street to 20th Street in Leavenworth County

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- U.S. 73/K-7 from 12th Street to 16th Street will be reduced to one lane each direction (in Leavenworth), 24/7 round the clock, as Phase Four pavement reconstruction work begins on Monday morning, July 6, weather permitting.

Here’s what this means for drivers:  U.S. 73/K-7 will now be reduced to one lane each direction from 10th Street to 16th Street for pavement reconstruction work.

Phase Three work (from 10th Street to 12th Street) began on June 10 and is scheduled to be completed in mid- to late July 2015, weather permitting.

WYANDOTTE COUNTY TRAFFIC ALERT: K-7 & I-70 Interchange permanent change annoucement

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- The new westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 ramp opened to traffic at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22.

Since the new westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 loop ramp is now open to all traffic, sometime during the day on Friday, January 2, 2015, weather permitting, the left turn lanes from the existing westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 ramp will be removed as crews will remove and install new pavement markings on the ramp.

WYANDOTTE COUNTY TRAFFIC ALERT: New Westbound I-70 to Southbound K-7 Loop Ramp Now Open

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- As of 9:00 a.m. TODAY,  Monday, December 22, the new westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 loop ramp (see ramp C in photo below) is NOW OPEN to unrestricted traffic in Bonner Springs (Wyandotte County).

The existing westbound I-70 for southbound K-7 ramp will remain open to all traffic for today as well.

New date announced for K-5 Repair and Resurfacing Project

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced a new date for a road construction project in Wyandotte County.

On Monday, August 11, a pavement repair and resurfacing project will begin on a 2.25-mile stretch of K-5 from I-635 to Sunshine Road in Kansas City, Kan. (Wyandotte County). 

Also, project work will take place on the ramps at I-635/18th Street, K-5/18th Street and K-5/10th Street. 

Project work includes pavement patching on K-5 mainline lanes and patching, milling and asphalt overlay on all ramps (listed above). Work will take place during daylight hours (sunrise to sunset), Monday through Friday with some occasional Saturday work. 

Traffic control installation work begin the week of August 4 and then starting at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, August 11, northbound and southbound K-5 from I-635 to Sunshine Road will be reduced to one lane each direction, 24/7 round the clock throughout the project duration. 

There will be a 12-foot lane width restriction and a 45 mph posted speed limit through the project work zone throughout the project duration. 

Project work will first be completed on all adjacent ramps (listed above) during two full 24/7 weekend closures followed by the patching work on K-5 mainline lanes. 

The ramps from northbound and southbound I-635 to 18th Street, southbound I-635 to eastbound/northbound K-5, 18th Street to eastbound/northbound K-5 and southbound/westbound K-5 to 10th Street will be closed, 24/7 round the clock, beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 14, and will reopen to all traffic at 6:00 a.m. on Monday, August 18. 

A marked detour will be provided. I-635 to K-5 ramp traffic will detour to Leavenworth Road then back on northbound I-635 to K-5. See detour route map below.

Realm Construction, Inc. (Blue Springs, MO) is the primary contractor on this rehabilitation project with a total contract cost of $1.32 million. Project work is scheduled to be completed in late August 2014, weather permitting.

Work to begin on 72nd Street Bridge Friday morning

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- Work will begin on the 72nd Street bridge over I-70 Friday morning at 9 a.m.

At 9:00 a.m. on Friday, November 1, the 72nd Street bridge over eastbound and westbound I-70 will be CLOSED, 24/7 round the clock, through early December 2013, so crews can repair work on the bridge from damage incurred by a October 3rd bridge strike by a dump truck completing work on the I-70 resurfacing project (see traffic alert below for more information) in Wyandotte County. No marked detour will be provided during the 35-day 72nd Street Bridge closure. Drivers will need to use alternate routes during the bridge closure.

TRAFFIC: Lanes to be reduced on I-70 from K-7 to 110th Street beginning July 23

KANSAS CITY, KAN. --- The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced lane closures for eastbound and westbound Interstate 70 from Kansas Highway 7 to 110th Street.

EXPECT DELAYS! Beginning at 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 23, eastbound and westbound I-70 from K-7 to 110th Street (Wyandotte County) will be reduced to one lane in each direction for a rolling roadblock conducted by the Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) and the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP) for the setting of bridge girders for the new Riverview Avenue Bridge. Each rolling moving roadblock is scheduled to take approximately 15 minutes each, pending any unplanned delays.

These rolling roadblock closures have been rescheduled from Thursday-Friday, July 18-19 to Tuesday-Wednesday, July 23-24.

During the rolling moving roadblocks, all traffic will be stopped at the entrance ramps to eastbound and westbound I-70 from K-7 and 110th Street for these brief closures. KTA and KHP personnel will slow motorists down from the I-70 interchange entrances to give the contractor time to cut the girders and swing them safely out of the way. All work will be completed and all eastbound and westbound I-70 lanes will be reopened to unrestricted traffic by 6:00 a.m. Wednesday morning, July 24.

Traffic will travel through the work zone via signage and the moving rolling roadblocks. Drivers should expect delays of up to 15 minutes during each rolling moving roadblock and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.

On Monday, March 18, 2013, a replacement project began on the Riverview Avenue Bridge spanning over I-70 in Wyandotte County. This is the first part of the ten-phase K-7 and I-70 Interchange Project.

Project work includes replacement of the existing bridge along with the realignment of a section of Riverview Avenue and 122nd Street to accommodate the new longer bridge. (KDOT Project #70-105 KA 1003-06)

I-635 over State Avenue bridge deck replacement project to begin Wednesday in Wyandotte County

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- On Wednesday, July 10, weather permitting, a two-phase deck replacement project will begin on the northbound and southbound I-635 Bridges over State Avenue in Kansas City, Kan. Work will take place during daylight hours, Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.

Phase one construction begins on Wednesday, July 10, and at this time northbound and southbound I-635 will be reduced to two open lanes and the westbound State Avenue to southbound I-635 ramp will be closed. Also during phase one, the eastbound State Avenue to northbound I-635 ramp will be closed, though this ramp will remain closed throughout the duration of the project. All other phase one construction is expected to be completed in late September 2013, weather permitting.

Marked detours will be provided for the phase one ramp closures. Westbound State Avenue to southbound I-635 ramp detour: traffic will take northbound I-635 to Parallel Parkway exit then back to southbound I-635. Eastbound State Avenue to northbound I-635 ramp detour: traffic will take 38th Street south to eastbound I-70 then back to northbound I-635.

Eastbound and westbound State Avenue traffic will have varying daily lane closures which could include several overnight full closures of the roadway for the deck removal work. Advance separate notification will be sent for these overnight closures.

Wyandotte County transportation project approved by KDOT

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- The Kansas Department of Transportation announces approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects in Kansas.

The letting took place June 19 in Topeka.

I-635 over State Avenue bridge deck replacement project to begin in Wyandotte County

Pavement repair project to begin today on I-70 in Western Wyandotte

On Wednesday evening, Oct. 17, a pavement repair project will begin for eastbound and westbound I-70 from 118th Street to K-7 in Wyandotte County.

The repair work will occur in the left two lanes in each direction on this stretch of I-70.

Work will take place daily overnight between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.

Overnight, both Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 17-18, westbound I-70 only will be reduced to one lane through the project work zone for pavement repair work.

Work will then resume again on Monday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. with eastbound and westbound I-70 reduced to one lane in each direction for the remainder of the project duration during working hours.

There will be a posted speed limit of 65 mph through the project work zone. Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via cones and signage during working hours.

Riverview bridge to close for over a month beginning Friday

News Release:

Riverview Avenue Bridge will be closed beginning Friday, Sept. 28th at 9 a.m. and will remain closed until Wednesday, Oct. 31st. 

Turner Diagonal under the Riverview Ave Bridge will be closed Saturday, Sept. 29th at 7 a.m. and will reopen Sunday, Sept. 30th at 10 p.m.

The closure is for emergency bridge repairs. The traffic control plans are attached which show the appropriate detour routing.

KDOT to host public open house for Lewis and Clark Viaduct

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is hosting a public open house for the Lewis and Clark Viaduct I-70 Concept Study on Wednesday, August 15.

The public is invited to attend the open house style meeting anytime between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Jack Reardon Convention Center, 520 Minnesota, Kansas City, Kan. For more information, visit: LCViaductI70.ksdot.org.

At the open house, participants can review and provide comments on the preferred concept for the Lewis and Clark Viaduct. KDOT staff and study team members will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the study. This is the third and final public meeting that will be held as part of the concept study.

The Lewis and Clark Viaduct I-70 Concept Study, initiated in March 2011, developed a plan for replacing or rehabilitating the nine bridges included in the viaduct. 

The study team reviewed traffic needs, crash information, land use plans and roadway and bridge alignments in an effort to enhance safety, mobility and efficiency within the interchange area.

The study also included several community engagement opportunities, from an online survey to public open houses and listening sessions.

The plan includes a general phasing recommendation plan based on bridge condition, constructability, and minimizing impacts to the traveling public. The preferred concept will be part of the final Concept Study Report which will conclude the study.

KDOT is moving forward with the first phase of the plan which includes replacement of the westbound bridge from the state line to just west of the Kansas River. Construction is anticipated to begin in the Fall of 2016.

The study began with bridge inspections and data collection efforts, including initial traffic and land use evaluation and community interviews to understand how the existing interchange area is being utilized.

The study team has analyzed the conditions of the bridges included in the viaduct and determined which structures can be rehabilitated or need to be replaced and the order in which the bridge improvements need to be implemented based on condition.

Access to 86th Street north of K-32 closed starting Monday

Access to 86th Street north of K-32 will be closed to all traffic beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, July 16 for repair work on a broken wing-wall on the northeast corner of the culvert that runs under 86th Street in Edwardsville.

Traffic access from 86th Street to south of K-32 will not be affected.

A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour via 88th Street and Barber Avenue. Drivers should expect minor delays and must use alternate routes during the roadway closure.

I-435 bridge-work to begin in Wyandotte County Monday

On Monday, July 16, repair and overlay work will begin on the northbound I-435 bridge over the Kansas River at the Wyandotte/Johnson County line.

Project work includes pavement patching and polymer overlay on the bridge deck. Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday during daylight hours.

Beginning on Monday, July 16 at 8:00 a.m., northbound I-435 will be reduced to two 11-foot lanes (only one lane will be closed) from approximately a half-mile south of the bridge and over the bridge itself, 24/7 round the clock, throughout the project duration.

Traffic will be directed through the project via concrete barrier and signage. A 60 mph speed limit will be posted through the project work zone.

Also, beginning on Monday, July 16, the Holiday Drive to northbound I-435 ramp will be closed and will remain closed throughout the project duration.

A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour south on I-435 to Johnson Drive, exit at the interchange, and then head back north on I-435.

Special note: The bridge repair project which began on July 5, on the northbound I-435 bridge over K-32 will impact this northbound I-435 over Kansas River bridge project.

Once this bridge project begins on July 16, northbound I 435 will be reduced to two open lanes between the two projects from Holiday Drive to K-32, approximately less than one mile.

Drivers should expect some delays, especially during peak morning/evening rush hours, and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.

I-35, I-635 ramps in Wyandotte County, Johnson County to be closed

Beginning at 8:00 p.m. on Friday, July 13 and reopening to all traffic at 5:00 a.m. on Monday, July 16 (with noted exceptions) the following closures will take place for concrete pavement removal work, shoulder work, bridge joint patching and joint seal work.

• Southbound right two lanes and shoulder will be closed from Johnson/Wyandotte county line to Foster Road

• Northbound I-635 to northbound I-35 ramp. Detour: Northbound I-635 to westbound Shawnee Drive to southbound I-635 to northbound I-35

• Southbound I-35 to northbound I-635 ramp. Detour: Southbound I-35 to eastbound Johnson Drive to northbound I-35 to northbound I-635 (The Antioch Road interchange is also another option for turning around)

• Merriam Lane to southbound I-35 entrance ramp. Will reopen at 7:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 15

• Foster Road from northbound/southbound US-69 to I-635. Will reopen sometime on Monday, July 23

Beginning at 12:00 a.m. MIDNIGHT on Saturday, July 14 and reopening to all traffic sometime on Monday, July 23, the southbound I-635 to southbound I-35 ramp will be closed for removal and replacement of the existing ramp pavement (mainline and shoulders) from SB I-635 to where the ramp gore area merges onto SB I-35 traffic. Detour: Southbound I-635/US-69 to westbound Shawnee Mission Parkway to southbound I-35.

On Saturday, July 14 between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., northbound I-635 right lane and shoulder from the northbound I-35 ramp to the southbound I-35 entrance ramp will be closed for asphalt staging and concrete joint repair and sealing work. The northbound I-35 to northbound I-635 ramp will remain open.

On Sunday, July 15 between 4:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m., northbound I-635 left lane and shoulder from Foster Road to the Johnson/Wyandotte county line will be closed for concrete joint repair and sealing work. The northbound I-35 to northbound I-635 ramp will remain open.

State Avenue CONNEX groundbreaking this Friday

The Unified Government will host a groundbreaking for the MetroCenter of the State Avene CONNEX this Friday.

The ceremony begins at 11 a.m. this Friday on will be located on the southeast corner of 7th and Minnesota Avenue.

The project will be funded by a $10.5 million federal grant.

The State Avenue CONNEX project, funded by a federal Transportation Investment Generating Economic Recovery (TIGER) grant, is nearing the end of the architectural design and engineering phase.  The Unified Government was awarded the $10.5-million federal grant to construct enhanced bus stations along the State Avenue corridor in Kansas City, Kansas.

The improved and enhanced bus corridor is currently scheduled to include 29 new or improved bus stations as well as two brand new “MetroCenters” located at 7th and Minnesota Avenue and 47th and State Avenue. Construction on the State Avenue CONNEX project is just beginning and is scheduled to be completed in Fall 2013.

I-435 over K-32 bridge repair project to begin Thursday in Wyandotte County

I-70 ramp on 18th Street to be closed beginning next Wednesday

The westbound I-70 to northbound 18th Street ramp will be closed to all traffic beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27 for emergency repair work on drainage structures underneath the ramp.

Advance message boards will alert drivers to the ramp closure.

A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will take westbound I-70 to 38th Street/Park Drive, and then take Park Drive back to 18th Street.  Drivers should expect minor delays and must use alternate routes during the ramp closure.

TRAFFIC: K-7 highway construction project begins tonight

On Monday evening, a resurfacing project will begin on a 3.5-mile stretch of northbound and southbound K-7 from the Kansas River bridge north to just past Elizabeth Street (north of the I-70/Kansas Turnpike) in Wyandotte County.

Project work includes the milling away of one-inch of existing pavement followed by the application of a one-inch overlay of new asphalt, along with new pavement markings on the resurfaced stretch of K-7.

Crews will complete work during the overnight hours between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m., Monday through Friday (except for work around the K-7 and I-70/Kansas Turnpike interchange which won’t begin until 7:00 p.m.)

Beginning on Monday, June 4 at 6:00 p.m., northbound and southbound K-7 will be reduced to one lane in both directions. During the project, one of the two left turn lanes from the I-70/Kansas Turnpike to southbound K-7 will be closed for resurfacing work.

Also there will be short durations (5-10 minutes) of flagging through the intersections at I-70/Kansas Turnpike and Kansas Avenue, and ramp closures at Nettleton Avenue and K-32.

Marked detours will be provided for the ramp closures. Advance notification will be provided under separate cover for these project-related closures.

There will be a 50 mph posted speed limit through the project work zone and traffic will be restricted to a 12-foot lane width restriction through the work zone during the duration of the project.

TRAFFIC: I-635 resurfacing project to begin Wednesday

On Wednesday, June 6, a pavement repair and resurfacing project will begin on I-635 from the Johnson/Wyandotte County line approximately .5-miles south to Foster Road in Overland Park.
Ramps included in the project: southbound I-35 to northbound I-635, northbound I-635 to northbound I-35, and southbound I-635 to southbound I-35.

Project work includes pavement replacement, pavement patching, asphalt overlay, and all new pavement markings on the resurfaced portion of I-635. Work will primarily take place Wednesday through Sunday, including 24-hour work on the weekends.

Beginning on Wednesday, June 6 at 7 a.m., I-635 will have varying lane closures during daytime hours for patching work. Ramp work will take place during weekend closures. The southbound I-635 to southbound I-35 ramp will be closed for a ten-day period for concrete replacement.

A marked detour will be provided during the ramp closures. We will provide advance notification for the ten-day ramp closure under separate cover.

Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via signage and cones. There will be a posted speed limit of 45 mph and an 11-foot lane width restriction during the southbound I-635 to southbound I-35 ramp closure only through the project work zone during working hours.

For the remainder of the project, there will be a posted speed limit of 45 mph and a 14-foot lane width restriction throughout the project work zone during working hours

Advance message boards will alert drivers to the lane and ramp closures. Drivers should expect major delays during the peak hours and should use alternate routes, if possible.
