State agencies and organizations urge all Kansans to help protect children from heatstroke

Kansas Department of Transportation

Topeka, Kan.  – Hot summer days across the United States have contributed to at least 24 child deaths this year from heatstroke when children were left unattended in vehicles.

Safe Kids Kansas, the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) and the Kansas Department for Children and Families (DCF) are joining together to observe National Heatstroke Prevention Day on July 31, and remind caregivers to never leave children alone in cars. As determined advocates in preventing childhood injury, these partners are working to together to educate parents and caregivers with tips to avoid these tragedies.

"As these tragedies continue to occur, Kansas partners are intensifying our efforts to get the message out that the inside of a vehicle is an extremely dangerous place for a child alone in hot weather," said Cherie Sage, Safe Kids Kansas.  “Even on a mild day, the inside of a car can reach deadly temperatures within 10 minutes. This is a place no child should be alone, and because children’s bodies heat up three to five times faster than adults’, they are much more susceptible to heatstroke.”

Most people assume this would never happen to them, but in over half of all cases, the parent or caregiver “misremembered.” That is, they believed their child had been dropped off and were safe with a care provider, unintentionally leaving them in the vehicle.

No Text Pledge Day designated for Kansas

A recently-completed AT&T study showed that on average, 43 percent of American teenage drivers admitted to texting and driving even though 97 percent know it is dangerous.

Because of those numbers, and the fact that it is illegal to text and drive in Kansas, Gov. Sam Brownback has proclaimed tomorrow, September 19, “No Text on Board Pledge Day”.

“Please Do Not Text and Drive. It Can Wait.” will be the driver safety message featured on electronic message signs located on major interstates across the state.

The Kansas Department of Transportation, along with many other state DOTs, are partnering with AT&T’s “It Can Wait” public awareness campaign for tomorrow’s national focus on this simple, yet powerful message: No text is worth dying for.

A recent university study shows that those who send text messages while driving are 23 more times likely to crash.

In his proclamation, Gov. Brownback calls on all Kansans to take the “no texting while driving pledge” and asks that all Kansans help spread this message throughout their communities.

Visit online at: www.itcanwait.com, to take the “don’t text and drive” pledge.

KDOT, State Farm team up for "Bucks for Buckles" campaign

News Release:
Thousands of vehicles will be traveling the Kansas roadways during the Labor Day weekend. Many families will head out on one last camping trip or getaway as the school year begins.

The Kansas Department of Health and Environment (KDHE) Safe Kids Kansas, State Farm and the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) want to encourage families to buckle up and drive safely to protect their most valuable asset, their families.

From Aug. 26 through Sept. 8, a safety belt awareness campaign called “Bucks for Buckles” is being held in 56 cities across Kansas. One dollar bills are being distributed by local volunteers to drivers who have all occupants buckled up securely in their vehicle. Those riding unrestrained will receive educational materials about the effectiveness of seat belts and child safety seats in saving lives and reducing injuries.

“No one can predict when they will be involved in a motor vehicle crash, yet almost all of us will be involved in an automobile crash in our lifetime. Last year, 382 people lost their lives on Kansas roadways and 50 percent of them were unbuckled,” said Cherie Sage, State Director for Safe Kids Kansas. “The single most effective means of protecting the lives of you and your passengers is wearing seat belts and using appropriate child restraints every time you ride in the vehicle – even short distances.”

According to the 2011 KDOT Safety Belt survey, only 83 percent of those surveyed ages 14 and older were wearing their seat belt. This is around the national average of 84 percent. In 2010, Kansas ranked 36th in the nation in seat belt usage.

“It is important that Kansans get the message that seat belts save lives,” stated Sage. “An average of 93 people die each day in motor vehicle crashes nationally; that’s an average of one death every 16 minutes.  This is unacceptable.”

For a list of sites and coordinators, of the 2012 Bucks for Buckles events see attached file.

For more information about safety belt or child safety seat use, call 785-296-1223 or visit www.safekidskansas.org and www.safekids.org.

KDOT to host public open house for Lewis and Clark Viaduct

The Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) is hosting a public open house for the Lewis and Clark Viaduct I-70 Concept Study on Wednesday, August 15.

The public is invited to attend the open house style meeting anytime between 4:30 p.m. and 6:30 p.m. at the Jack Reardon Convention Center, 520 Minnesota, Kansas City, Kan. For more information, visit: LCViaductI70.ksdot.org.

At the open house, participants can review and provide comments on the preferred concept for the Lewis and Clark Viaduct. KDOT staff and study team members will be on hand to answer questions and discuss the study. This is the third and final public meeting that will be held as part of the concept study.

The Lewis and Clark Viaduct I-70 Concept Study, initiated in March 2011, developed a plan for replacing or rehabilitating the nine bridges included in the viaduct.

The study team reviewed traffic needs, crash information, land use plans and roadway and bridge alignments in an effort to enhance safety, mobility and efficiency within the interchange area.

The study also included several community engagement opportunities, from an online survey to public open houses and listening sessions.

The plan includes a general phasing recommendation plan based on bridge condition, constructability, and minimizing impacts to the traveling public. The preferred concept will be part of the final Concept Study Report which will conclude the study.

KDOT is moving forward with the first phase of the plan which includes replacement of the westbound bridge from the state line to just west of the Kansas River. Construction is anticipated to begin in the Fall of 2016.

The study began with bridge inspections and data collection efforts, including initial traffic and land use evaluation and community interviews to understand how the existing interchange area is being utilized.

The study team has analyzed the conditions of the bridges included in the viaduct and determined which structures can be rehabilitated or need to be replaced and the order in which the bridge improvements need to be implemented based on condition.

For more information on the study, please visit:  LCViaductI70.ksdot.org, email the study team at LCViaductI70@hntb.com, or contact Kimberly Qualls, Northeast Kansas KDOT Public Affairs Manager, at (785) 640-9340. (KDOT Project #70-105 KA-2130-01)
