Kansas Department of Transportation to host open house for K-7 corridor construction

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ----- The Kansas Department of Transportation is hosting an informational public open house to present and discuss intersection improvement strategies along a portion of Kansas Highway 7 from Gilman Road in Leavenworth County south to Parallel Parkway in Wyandotte County.

The public is invited to attend the open house style meeting on Wednesday, March 25, anytime between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. at the Lansing Community Center, City Hall Basement, Lansing, KS 66043.

The Kansas Department of Transportation, the cities of Basehor, Lansing and Leavenworth, Leavenworth County, and the Unified Government of Wyandotte County/Kansas City, Kan., are working together to develop intersection improvement strategies for the K-7 corridor from Gilman Road (Leavenworth County) south to Parallel Parkway (Wyandotte County).

The intent of this corridor study effort is to improve traveler safety and traffic flow along the K-7 corridor.

At the open house, KDOT and the consulting team will provide background information on this study effort as well as discuss the strategies that are being analyzed. Intersection improvement strategies will be on display and KDOT and consultant staff members will be on hand to discuss and answer questions. There will be no formal presentations.

WYANDOTTE COUNTY TRAFFIC ALERT: K-7 & I-70 Interchange permanent change annoucement

KANSAS CITY, KAN. ---- The new westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 ramp opened to traffic at 9:00 a.m. on Monday, December 22.

Since the new westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 loop ramp is now open to all traffic, sometime during the day on Friday, January 2, 2015, weather permitting, the left turn lanes from the existing westbound I-70 to southbound K-7 ramp will be removed as crews will remove and install new pavement markings on the ramp.

Residents welcomed to take KDOT survey on K-7, I-70 Interchange project

BONNER SPRINGS, KAN. ---- If you are a Bonner Springs or Wyandotte County resident, you may be interested in taking a survey from the Kansas Department of Transportation regarding construction work at K-7 and Interstate 70.

Phases 1-3 of the K-7 and I-70 Interchange improvement project have begun in Bonner Springs. Phase 1 and 2A began during 2013; phase 2B during 2014.  

Phase 3 will begin spring of 2015. Thus far, crews have completed construction of Phase 2A, which involved realigning 122nd Street and Riverview Avenue and rebuilding the Riverview Bridge over I-70. T-WORKS dollars are funding construction.

HIGHWAY CONSTRUCTION: Riverview Avenue bridge replacement project set to begin in Wyandotte County

On Monday, March 18, a replacement project will begin on the Riverview Avenue Bridge spanning over I-70 in Wyandotte County. This is the first part of the ten-phase K-7 and I-70 Interchange Project.

Project work includes replacement of the existing bridge along with the realignment of a section of Riverview Avenue and 122nd Street to accommodate the new longer bridge. Work will take place Monday through Saturday, between 7 a.m. - 5 p.m. daily.

Beginning on Monday, March 18, Riverview Avenue will be closed between 126th Street and 118th Street, and 122nd Street will be closed at Kansas Avenue. These closures will remain in effect until the new alignments of Riverview Avenue and 122nd Street are completed which is scheduled for early June 2013, weather permitting. 

At that time, Riverview Avenue will reopen from 118th Street to 122nd Street, but will remain closed from 122nd Street to 126th Street for the duration of the project. A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour via 126th Street to State Avenue to 118th Street back to Riverview Avenue.

Access to Sunflower Hills Golf Course will remain open during the project duration. For golf course access, drivers will continue on Riverview Avenue to Tom Lally Drive.

Eastbound and westbound I-70 traffic will remain in two lanes each direction, except for periodic lane closures. Traffic will be directed via signs, cones, impact attenuators and concrete safety barrier through the project work zone.

I70, K7 project scheduled for 2013

Hundreds of projects that will enhance traveler safety and preserve or expand the state highway system have been scheduled for the next two years.

More than 430 projects scheduled for the 2013-14 fiscal years will improve 1,600 miles of highway and replace or repair 209 bridges and interchanges.

The 2013 state fiscal year began July 1 and many of the projects are under way. The estimated cost of the projects is $1.1 billion.

“The majority of these projects are considered preservation work and will protect the investment Kansans have made in their transportation system,” said Kansas Transportation Secretary Mike King. “But there are also some big projects that will expand capacity on some of the state’s busiest corridors and spur economic development.”

Locally, one project will include work on Interstate 70 near The Legends in Western Wyandotte County.

Construction will effect traffic near Lewis and Clark Viaduct this weekend

Saturday, November 3:

• Westbound I-70 from Beardsley Road (in Missouri) to near the 5th Street exit ramp (in Kansas City, Kansas) will have traffic impacts for survey work scheduled to take place on Saturday, November 3 between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. 

• Westbound I-70 to Fairfax Trafficway ramp will be closed between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour westbound on I-70 to Pacific Avenue, where traffic will be able to turn around and travel back on eastbound I-70 to 3rd Street back to Fairfax Trafficway. 

• Westbound I-70 to Washington Boulevard ramp will be closed between 2:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. on Saturday. There will be no marked detour for this ramp closure. Only one ramp will be closed at a time.    

Sunday, November 4:

• Eastbound I-70 from the I-70 entrance ramp onto the Lewis & Clark Viaduct (in Kansas) to the I-35 exit ramp (in Missouri) will have a mobile traffic control operation that will be in place to protect survey technicians working in the left two lanes on eastbound I-70. This work will be limited durations occurring during the day between approximately 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. 

Project work is scheduled to be completed on Sunday, November 4, weather permitting.

Funding for three Wyandotte County highway projects approved by KDOT

The Kansas Department of Transportation announces approved bids for state highway construction and maintenance projects in Kansas.

Three Wyandotte County projects were approved.

The letting took place Oct. 17 in Topeka.

• Wyandotte - State Avenue from 94th Street to 82nd Street, grading/bridge and surfacing, 1.5 miles. Kansas Heavy Construction LLC, Tonganoxie, $6,086,246.80.

• Wyandotte - Walking trail between Shadyside and West Morse Avenue, surfacing, 0.9 mile. Amino Brothers Company Inc., Kansas City, Kan., $179,804.80.

The following project was approved from the Sept. 19, letting.

• Wyandotte – I‑70 from the K‑7 junction east 1.3 miles, pavement patching, 1.3 miles, Chester Bross Construction Co/C B Equipment Inc., $534,739.00

Pavement repair project to begin today on I-70 in Western Wyandotte

On Wednesday evening, Oct. 17, a pavement repair project will begin for eastbound and westbound I-70 from 118th Street to K-7 in Wyandotte County.

The repair work will occur in the left two lanes in each direction on this stretch of I-70.

Work will take place daily overnight between 7 p.m. and 6 a.m., Monday through Friday, with some occasional Saturday work.

Overnight, both Wednesday and Thursday, Oct. 17-18, westbound I-70 only will be reduced to one lane through the project work zone for pavement repair work.

Work will then resume again on Monday, Oct. 22 at 7 p.m. with eastbound and westbound I-70 reduced to one lane in each direction for the remainder of the project duration during working hours.

There will be a posted speed limit of 65 mph through the project work zone. Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via cones and signage during working hours.

Construction work on I-70, Lewis and Clark bridges complete

The Kansas Department of Transportation has announced that work on the eastbound Interstate 70 and Lewis and Clark Viaduct bridges has wrapped up.

Work began on the overlay project in late July 30. It was a two-phase project.

Here's some background on the project. Obviously, ignore the information about the lane-closings since the construction is over: 

For phase one of the project, beginning on Monday, July 30 at 9:00 a.m., eastbound I-70 will be reduced to two open lanes (two lane closed) across the Lewis and Clark Viaduct, 24/7 round the clock, throughout the project duration. Traffic will be restricted to two 11-foot lanes with a posted speed limit of 45 mph through the project work zone. As well, the ramps from Washington Boulevard eastbound I-70 and from Fairfax Avenue to eastbound I-70 will be closed will be closed during phase one work. A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour via Minnesota Avenue to eastbound I-70.

For phase two of the project, eastbound I-70 will be closed at 3rd Street, 24/7 round the clock, for the duration of the project. A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour via 3rd Street to Minnesota Avenue then back to eastbound I-70. Traffic will remain in two open lanes (two lanes closed) across the Lewis and Clark Viaduct. Traffic will continue to be restricted to two 11-foot lanes with a posted speed limit of 45 mph through the project work zone. The ramp from Washington Boulevard to eastbound I-70 will remain closed. Advance notification will be sent under separate cover when phase two of the project begins.

TRAFFIC: Construction work on I-70, 38th Street bridge to begin Sept. 30

The Kansas Turnpike Authority (KTA) will be completing repair work on eastbound I-70 on the 38th Street Bridge beginning on Sunday, Sept. 30.

In order to complete the repair work the following lane and ramp closures will be in place, 24/7 round the clock, beginning at 7 p.m. on Sunday, September 30 and reopening to all traffic at 6 a.m. on Friday, October 5.

• Eastbound I-70 right lane at the 38th Street Bridge

• Northbound I-635 to eastbound I-70 ramp

• Eastbound I-70 to 38th Street ramp

Advance message boards will alert traffic to the lane and ramp closures.

Drivers should expect major delays during peak commute times and must use alternate routes during the ramp closures.

Overlay project to begin on EB I-70 over the Lewis & Clark Viaduct in Wyandotte County

On Monday, July 30, an overlay project will begin on eastbound I-70 on the Lewis and Clark Viaduct bridges over the Kansas River in Wyandotte County.

This will be a two phase project which includes application of a polymer overlay on the bridge deck. Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday.

For phase one of the project, beginning on Monday, July 30 at 9:00 a.m., eastbound I-70 will be reduced to two open lanes (two lane closed) across the Lewis and Clark Viaduct, 24/7 round the clock, throughout the project duration. Traffic will be restricted to two 11-foot lanes with a posted speed limit of 45 mph through the project work zone.

As well, the ramps from Washington Boulevard eastbound I-70 and from Fairfax Avenue to eastbound I-70 will be closed will be closed during phase one work. A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour via Minnesota Avenue to eastbound I-70.

Access to 86th Street north of K-32 closed starting Monday

Access to 86th Street north of K-32 will be closed to all traffic beginning at 8:00 a.m. on Monday, July 16 for repair work on a broken wing-wall on the northeast corner of the culvert that runs under 86th Street in Edwardsville.

Traffic access from 86th Street to south of K-32 will not be affected.

A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour via 88th Street and Barber Avenue. Drivers should expect minor delays and must use alternate routes during the roadway closure.

TRAFFIC: I-435 over Kansas River bridge repair project to begin in Wyandotte/Johnson County

On Monday, July 16, repair and overlay work will begin on the northbound I-435 bridge over the Kansas River at the Wyandotte/Johnson County line.

Project work includes pavement patching and polymer overlay on the bridge deck. Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday during daylight hours.

Beginning on Monday, July 16 at 8:00 a.m., northbound I-435 will be reduced to two 11-foot lanes (only one lane will be closed) from approximately a half-mile south of the bridge and over the bridge itself, 24/7 round the clock, throughout the project duration.

Traffic will be directed through the project via concrete barrier and signage. A 60 mph speed limit will be posted through the project work zone.

Also, beginning on Monday, July 16, the Holiday Drive to northbound I-435 ramp will be closed and will remain closed throughout the project duration.

A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour south on I-435 to Johnson Drive, exit at the interchange, and then head back north on I-435.

Special note: The bridge repair project which began on July 5, on the northbound I-435 bridge over K-32 will impact this northbound I-435 over Kansas River bridge project.

Once this bridge project begins on July 16, northbound I 435 will be reduced to two open lanes between the two projects from Holiday Drive to K-32, approximately less than one mile.

Drivers should expect some delays, especially during peak morning/evening rush hours, and are encouraged to use alternate routes, if possible.

I-435 over K-32 bridge repair project to begin Thursday in Wyandotte County

On Thursday, July 5, repair and overlay work will begin on the northbound and southbound I-435 bridges over K-32 in Wyandotte County. Repair work on the project includes: patching and overlay on the bridge deck, and replacement of the approach pavement.

Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Beginning on Thursday, July 5 at 7:00 a.m., northbound and southbound I-435 will be reduced to two open 11-foot lanes (only one lane will be closed) from approximately a half-mile north/south of the respective bridges and over the bridges themselves throughout the project duration.

All adjacent ramps will remain open. Traffic will be directed through the project via concrete barrier and signage. A 60 mph speed limit will be posted through the project work zone.

I-70 ramp on 18th Street to be closed beginning next Wednesday

The westbound I-70 to northbound 18th Street ramp will be closed to all traffic beginning at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 27 for emergency repair work on drainage structures underneath the ramp.

Advance message boards will alert drivers to the ramp closure.

A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will take westbound I-70 to 38th Street/Park Drive, and then take Park Drive back to 18th Street.  Drivers should expect minor delays and must use alternate routes during the ramp closure.

TRAFFIC: Work on I-70 bridge over 18th Street begins Saturday morning

Weather permitting, on Saturday, May 12, repair and overlay work will begin on the eastbound I-70 over 18th Street Bridge in Wyandotte County.

Repair work on the project includes patching and a silica fume overlay on the bridge deck and approaches, and replacement of the bridge expansion joints.

Work will take place daily, Monday through Friday during daylight hours.

Beginning at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, eastbound I-70 will be reduced to one open lane from approximately a half-mile prior to and over the bridge itself as crews complete pavement striping work and set traffic control for the repair project.

Once striping and traffic control are in place sometime later that same day, eastbound I-70 will then be reduced to two open 12-foot lanes from approximately one-half mile prior to and over the bridge, 24/7 round the clock, for the duration of the project.

Traffic will be directed through the project work zone via concrete barrier and signage. A 55 mph speed limit will be posted through the project work zone.

Painting work will also take place on the bridges so 18th Street will be reduced to one lane in both directions during only those times when crews are working on the repair project.

Also beginning on at 5:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 12, the southbound 18th Street to eastbound I-70 entrance ramp will be closed for the duration of the project.

A marked detour will be provided. Traffic will detour via southbound 18th Street to eastbound Kansas Avenue to northbound 18th Street back to eastbound I-70.

During the second phase of the project, the eastbound I-70 to northbound 18th Street exit ramp will be closed when traffic is shifted to the two inside lanes on eastbound I-70. A marked detour will be provided.

Traffic will be detoured via eastbound I-70 to 7th Street exit to westbound I-70 back to northbound 18th Street. These additional traffic impacts for the project will be provided under separate notification in advance of the planned closures.
