Google Fiber Update: KCK hits 50
By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com
With just over four full days left to register for the Google Fiber high-speed Internet service, Kansas City, Kan., has hit a milestone.
The 50th Fiberhood met its goal on Tuesday, meaning the number of total Fiberhoods remaining is under 25.
The top five closest Fiberhoods to turning green in terms of numbers required: Welborn (8), Downtown (7), Turner Diagnoal (11), Memorial Park (9) and Painted Hills (17).
In terms of the top five according to the Google ranking: Melrose (25), Pomeroy (19), Painted Hills (17), Stony Point (22) and Tauromee Avenue (24).
Along with the 50th Fiberhood milestone, KCK hit another milestone.
In order to turn the entire county green, fewer than 1,000 registrations are needed.

Google Fiber Update: Looking at the Fiberhoods that are in trouble
By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com
Most of our Fiberhood updates have concentrated on which ones were closing on in the pre-registration goal.
Today, I'm doing something a little different - looking at the Fiberhoods that are in trouble and may not reach the goals.
Some need a little help. Some need a lot of help.
For community activists who are looking to increase registrations and getting more Fiberhoods into the green, consider this an important read. It could help concentrate door-to-door efforts into a limited area.
These are the Fiberhoods that are in "yellow" on the Fiberhood map, meaning they're farther away and are on pace not to reach the goal.
The green Fiberhoods above are those who have met the goals and the orange ones are those closing in.
Here's the list of the yellow Fiberhoods in the order as they appear on the Google Fiber Website, along with the number of registrations needed:
Tauromee, 30
Rainbow Ridge, 35
Arrowhead, 233
Woodview Ridge, 59
Southwest Boulevard, 22
River Oaks, 168
Watchtower, 55
Armourdale, 75
Community College, 55
Bryant, 18
Sumner, 64
Banneker, 36
Coronado, 61
Splitlog, 36
N. 55th, 32
Memorial Park, 10
Quail Creak, 58
Forest Glen, 37
While finishing the job in the orange Fiberhoods is important, these are the Fiberhoods that should probably be targeted for the handful of community organizations that have been active in the registration process.
Meet-up scheduled for Melrose Fiberhood
By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com
The Melrose Fiberhood in Kansas City, Kan., has not reached its Google Fiber registration goal yet - and there's still quite a way to go.
Some in the community want that to change.
Residents who live in the Turner area of KCK, are invited to help get the word out about Google Fiber.
A gathering will be held from 6-7:30 p.m. Thursday, August 30 at Pierson Park, located at 1800 S. 55th Street. A door-to-door campaign will be held that night.
Organizers for the event are seeking many volunteers in an effort to reach every home in the area.
In terms of schools, the Melrose Fiberhood is pretty important.
Inside Melrose contains Turner High School, Turner Elementary School and Oak Grove Elementary School.
For more information about the event, check out this Website.

Google Fiber Update: KCK now has 13 green Fiberhoods; more within reach
By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com
There are two new green Fiberhoods on the Google Fiber map.
Alvey Park and Edison School Fiberhoods have joined the fun, both reaching the goal on Sunday. Among the benefits of Alvey Park reaching the goal is Turner Middle School will receive Google Fiber for free.
Those two Fiberhoods reaching their pre-registration goals means there are a total of 13 Fiberhoods in KCK that have met their goals.
In addition, six Fiberhoods are within 10 registrations.
- The Piper Schools Fiberhood is just three more away. All of the schools inside the Piper School District would receive the high-speed Internet for free.
- Eugene Ware, 4
- Washington High School, 6.
- Wyandotte Center, 7
- Grinter, 8
- Miland Pumping, 9

Google Fiber morning update: July 27
By NICK SLOAN, NJSloan212@gmail.com
Late last night, Kansas City, Kan., had its second "Fiberhood" reach their pre-registration goal for Google Fiber.
The North KU Medical Center Fiberhood has exceeded its goal, becoming the second in KCK to do so.
The current Top 10 Fiberhoods in KCK as of this morning:
1. Hannover Heights (exceeded its goal)
2. Dubs Dread (90 more registrations required)
3. Piper Schools (157 more registrations)
4. North KU Medical Center (exceeded its goal)
5. Frank Rushton (0 more needed...but it has not turned green yet, so I'm not sure about that)
6. Plaza at the Speedway (174 more needed)
7. Open Door (99 more)
8. Strawberry Hill (14 more)
9. Delaware Ridge (180 more)
10. Pomeroy (64 more)
I'm not exactly sure why North KU Med is listed in fourth place despite meeting its goal before the second and third place Fiberhoods, but I'm going by the Website.
All of the Fiberhoods in KCK can be viewed at this link.
Again, the cost to pre-register for Google Fiber is $10. The deadline is September 9.
